The Kanata West Fire Station #46 was constructed in accordance with the City of Ottawa’s Green Building Policy. The building is LEED Silver certified through the Canada Green Building Council.
Station # 46 includes three apparatus bays, a watch room, a gear room, a hose tower, and a clean room. In addition, staff are provided with offices, dormitories, locker rooms, kitchen/dining facilities, exercise facilities, and a meeting/training room. Exterior site features include: staff amenity patio, vehicle extrication training enclosure, on-site storm water management and low maintenance natural landscaping.
The building incorporates a wide array of sustainable design features to reduce energy consumption, use of natural resources, impact on the environment, and improve occupant health and comfort, including:
• Reduced energy consumption for a 40% energy cost savings;
• Radiant in-floor heating ad an increased attention to air quality throughout;
• Reduced heat impact from the roof and landscape area via steel roof & plantings;
• Energy efficient windows and doors along with passive solar design;
• Elimination of CFC refrigerants;
• Renewable and recycled materials used throughout;
• Use of low VOC materials for improved interior air quality.
