McDonald Brothers Construction served as a Construction Manager for this project with Ottawa Community Housing. This affordable housing complex is a 4-storey building located on Merivale Road in Ottawa. It is one of the City’s most energy efficient buildings as it is one of Ottawa’s first Passive House designs – meaning it relies on building techniques and materials instead of HVAC systems to maintain the appropriate temperature in the building throughout the winter and summer seasons.
The building was constructed with accessibility in mind. It boasts 4-storeys that consist of 12 barrier-free units and 30 accessible units. Insulated concrete forms (ICF) were used throughout the building and all windows are triple-pane. The ground floor serves as an addition to the Carlington Community Health Centre. Each floor features a common space for laundry, a kitchenette and a social area. In addition, the main floor hosts a raised rooftop garden and a shared gathering space for events and activities.
