McDonald Brothers Construction was awarded the job of restoring of the S.G. Nesbitt Memorial Arena in Minden Hills, Ontario. However, after the initial investigation process took place, it became apparent that the existing arena would have to be demolished due to chloride salts that were discovered the building’s mortar and foundation compromising its structural integrity, due to poor construction practices when the initial structure was built in 1972. As a result, the scope of work shifted to the construction of a brand-new recreational facility. Because of this, the delivery method of the project evolved into an Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) which is another form of design-build.
Demolition of the exiting arena started in May 2019. The new facility includes a modern NHL sized arena and six change rooms. In addition, new office space for township staff, a new gymnasium, an elevated walking track and renovations to the existing Minden Hills Community Centre were also included. The new facility is also expected to receive 3 Green Globes.
