Project details

MBC was selected to act as Construction Manager for this deep retrofit of a mid-twentieth century former school / repurposed office building, now to be converted into 46 new supportive housing units for women and gender-diverse people including 12 fully accessible units, a common room, nursing and healthcare area and an outdoor garden and canopy.

Due to the age of the building (1930’s), significant demolition, asbestos and other designated substance abatement works had to be completed before any major interior repair and finishing works could be completed. The architectural layout, mechanical and electrical systems had to be entirely replaced and reconfigured for residential purposes. In addition, the tight layout and proximity of the location in a busy inner-city neighbourhood created numerous challenges with staging of materials, traffic control, security and safety, and disruption to residents.

The results were worth the efforts, with the complete restoration of a beautiful heritage property, while adding modern amenities and flair, we have created a truly functional and liveable residence in the heart of Ottawa’s Golden Triangle neighbourhood.
